You know that a beloved pop-culture property is bound to be lined up with sequels, reboots and remakes as long as the sense of nostalgia is still profitable to some executives in high places. But it’s really rare to see something treat that nostalgia with the respect it deserves and build up to expand the original’s horizons in new beguiling directions. With its first season being certified a 100% fresh at Rotten Tomatoes, and often being regarded as one of the best new series of 2018 – this underdog of a show named Cobra Kai brings back our favorite 80’s characters Ralph Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso & William Zabka’s Johnny Lawrence face to face in an amazing ten part story that reignites their renowned teen rivalry years down the line, and then evolves into an all new beast in itself. In all honesty, after three lackluster sequels & a reboot to follow the original classic, this was a direction I never expected the story of these two characters to ever drift towards – I mean, think about it – on paper, it could’ve easily been a recipe for disaster. Does anyone really want to spend ten episodes seeing the same old Jersey kid turned All-Valley karate champion & the quintessential bully in their middle age re-entering the world of dojos & karate competitions? As it turns out – that’s a big yes! I won’t spoil much. Rather – I’ll let everyone here check out the first episode down below, and decide for themselves if the rest of the series is worth checking out. My opinion? – hell yeah, it is!
Cobra Kai Episode 1: “Ace Degenerate” Full Episode:
If you want to check out the rest of the series, they’re all available as Youtube Originals. The second season comprising of 10 episodes was released on April 24th, 2019.
Feel free to let me know your thoughts on the series. If Daniel LaRusso & Johnny Lawrence were household names for you while growing up, you’re gonna find this series one hell of an emotional roller coaster. And if you’re not all that well versed with the original classic, I really suggest you give The Karate Kid (1984) a shot and then check out this series. It’s a pretty rare feat they’ve accomplished here – don’t miss it!
